Welcome to The William Steele House at 89 Beaufain St. The William Steele House is a Category 1 historic residence with a well documented resume of previous visitors including General Robert E. Lee. Construction of this grand home began in 1811 by the Steele Family which owned a local sawmill and used the finest materials and skilled artisan craftsman from the area to construct the home. The hand carved mantles and moldings in the home have been carefully restored. This involved removing as many as 33 layers of paint by hand as to not compromise the delicate details of the ornate moldings and trim. At nearly 200 years of age, this home has survived the Great Fire of the 1860's and an earthquake which destroyed most of the Charleston peninsula in 1886. The current owner has restored the home to its original state and incorporated modern state of the art technology that will see the home through the next 100 years. The original structure, circa 1811, had an addition that was added in 1917 on the rear of the home. At the insistence of the BAR, the 1917 addition space was kept and used to tie the original home to a new structure in the rear of the home in 2004 which consists of a kitchen on the first floor and a master bathroom on the second floor. The 2004 addition as well as the Carriage House is constructed with concrete block and steel rebar along with steel I-Beams to insure structural stability and integrity. The foundations of these structures consist of more than 60 tons of crushed granite underneath which were compacted in 12 inch lifts that stretch more than 10 feet below grade. The total rehabilitation of the home consisted of 5 phases (1)Restoration of the main house (2)Addition to the main house using the 1917 space to tie the 2 structures (3)Construction of the Carriage House (4)Utility infrastructure *underground power, gas, water, waste water, storm drainage system* (5)Landscape and hardscape design with full outdoor kitchen, gas grill, cascading waterfalls, wine reserve, fireplace, pavilion canopy, koi pond, formal English gardens and privacy wall surrounding entire perimeter of the property. The wrought iron gates were designed and influenced by the Philip Simmons Foundation. The drive way is a mixture of oyster shell, lime, marble dust, plant stems and sand. All fireplaces in the home have been completely restored. The Carriage House consists of 3 bedrooms and 3 and a half baths with a full kitchen, living area and laundry. You will love the Carriage House stairwell that is lined with glass tile, it is a must see! Both the Main House and Carriage House are accented with custom stone flooring and stone counter tops in the kitchens and baths. The William Steele House is further distinguished with an architectural feature known as a palladium corner. The homes are wired for sound and video security. Short walk to King St. and Market St. shopping.
